The rock mechanics group at West Virginia University is focussed on four major areas of rock mechanics:

  1. Experimental Rock Mechanics- Involves fundamental testing of coal measures rocks.

  2. Numerical modeling in geomechanics- Application of two and three dimension finite difference models, particle flow codes to mining geomechanics.

  3. Theoretical Rock Mechanics- Constitutive model development, failure criteria

  4. Space Geomechanics- Extending application of rock mechanics to asteroid characterization, anchoring
